Thesis - Deflectometry for industrial measurements of reflective surfaces

In industrial inspection one often aims to measure the shape and dimensions of an object. Here at IVP we have a strong background and history in the use of laser triangulation for creating 3D images which can then be processed to find defects in products or processes in the industry. However, laser triangulation struggles with shiny and reflective materials. There’s research into the use of deflectometry, where one uses the fact that the object is shiny, letting a pattern mirror off the surface and look at it with a camera and from that reconstruct the shape.

This thesis proposes the question, can deflectometry be used as an alternative, or complimentary measurement method when objects are shiny / highly reflective. Questions for this thesis could include:

  • How does one calibrate this system to produce millimeter values?
  • Benefits and drawbacks of various projection patterns?
  • How does the method fare with complex objects? (Non-planar surfaces and concave objects).
  • How does the method perform in terms of accuracy compared to traditional laser triangulation?

Prerequisites

This thesis will require knowledge in image processing, mathematics, and visualization and will give the opportunity of working with real hardware to solve industry close and relevant problems.
