Thesis - 3D Camera Color Registration

SICK's Ranger3 product is a 3D camera built on the principle of laser triangulation. The custom image sensor used in Ranger3 has a pixel array for height detection, but also three pixel rows with high-resolution color data (RGB). Using our standard 3D-geometry and lenses the color data needs to be registered back to the 3D data in order to be able to present a 3D image with color overlay. This can be done using existing information about the target's movement.

The thesis task is to find an efficient way to implement this in the Ranger3 FPGA, so that the device can deliver color in real time registered on the height data. There is existing code to do this color registration off-line in a PC after the data has been collected, but there are several challenges to solve to be able to do it on the fly in the FPGA:

  • Real time registration to select which color profiles that should be combined depending on geometry and object speed
  • Efficient storage of color profiles as the memory resources in the FPGA is limited
  • Efficient implementation of the color registration logic to be able to handle full speed data streams (7000 images/s)
