Thesis - Efficient device communication protocol

Our vision sensor devices are communicating using multiple protocols designed for different purposes, for example configuration parameters and image streaming. Using multiple protocols adds complexity and maintenance cost and a single protocol might be beneficial.

The goal of this thesis is to investigate if the current protocols can be replaced with a new single protocol. Besides supporting the existing use cases it should also meet increased requirements in terms of performance and security. The master thesis work focuses on the following:

• Evaluate advantages and disadvantages of existing protocols (both SICK proprietary and open standards)
• Investigate performance (e.g. transport layer, serialization, and compression) of the protocols
• Investigate security (e.g. authentication, authorization, and encryption) of the protocols

 Prerequisites

You will benefit from experience in some of the following fields:

• Programming (C++, TypeScript, C#, Python)
• Computer networking
• Compression
• Encryption and cyber-security
