At SICK, we develop SICK Nova, a software platform and user interface that enables users to configure image processing on cameras to solve industrial applications such as counting, measuring, and quality inspection. However, this configuration process can be challenging for users without deep expertise in machine vision.

Recent research explores the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) as reasoning and planning agents to solve real-world problems. These include tasks such as navigating phone calls, completing video games, and browsing websites to purchase products.

This thesis investigates how reasoning agents based on LLMs can be designed and applied to automatically solve vision applications.

Research Questions

  • Which models work best for vision-related reasoning tasks?
  • For which types of applications is this approach most effective?
  • How should the available tooling for the LLM be designed?
  • What is the most effective way to represent the camera’s state and data?

Prerequisites

An interest in or prior experience with multimodal LLMs is beneficial.
